Description	:	Lt. Comdr. Robert K. Whitney, son of Stella Olivia Ericksen McDonald and Wayne K. Whitney, was born January 5, 1920, at Hardington, Nebraska. He moved to Harlan, Iowa at an early age and attended the schools here graduating from Harlan High school in 1938. Mr Whitney died as the result of an accident while hunting, at Malaneton, Tennessee where he was serving as Lt. Commander with the United States Navy. Whitney, son of Stella Olivia Ericksen McDonald and Wayne K. Whitney, was born January 5, 1920, at Hardington, Nebraska. He moved to Harlan, Iowa at an early age and attended the schools here graduating from Harlan High school in 1938. Mr Whitney died as the result of an accident while hunting, at Malaneton, Tennessee where he was serving as Lt. Commander with the United States Navy. He was 32 years, 11 months and 6 days at the time of his death. He, with two companions were duck hunting and their small motorboat capsized about 18 miles north of Memphis. The other two men made it safely to shore. Lt. Comdr. Whitney had served as a navy pilot during the second World War from 1942 to 1945 and had remained in the service since that time. He was a member of the Navy Officer's Club. At Napa, California on August 8, 1948 he was united in marriage to Myra Leona Holderman. They were the parents of one child, Eric Adair Whitney age two. Besides his wife and little son, he is survived by his mother, Mrs Stella McDonald, his step-father Stewart McDonald, and a brother, Lt.Donald S. Whitney, now stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga; another brother, Jack Whitney, preceded him in death in 1935 and an annual award for scholarship and sportsmanship was established by his parents in his memory. A military funeral with honors was held December 11, at the Methodist church in Harlan with the Rev. Beals and Chaplin Parsons of Millington, Tennessee officiating. Pallbearers were; Lt. Comdr. Cordray, Lt. Comdr. Bishop. Lt. Comdr. Blake, Lt. Blackey, Lt. Bancroft Lt. Bowlin, Lt. Nelson and Lt. Norris. Forty navy friends from Millington Tennessee and a firing squad of ten men from Lincoln, Nebraska attended the funeral. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery.
