He attended West high in Sioux City, where he participated in baseball and wrestling, graduating in 1986. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps April 18, 1988, and took basic training at San Diego. He was stationed in North Carolina for a time, then was assigned to Pearl Harbor in September 1988. He had been home on leave last May and had planned to be home again April 2, 1990. He was a security guard for special projects. Borchers was to have been assigned to a ship and sent to Okinawa after six months of specialized training. Survivors include his parents, Gregory and Jan Borchers of Sioux City; a brother, Brian, at home and two sisters, Monica and Kimberly, both of Sioux City; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. William (Marcella) Beckman, and maternal grandparents, Fred and Lelia Carlson, all of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Chad, who died of Leukemia at age 3 in 1979, and his paternal grandfather, Harvey Borchers, an Akron native.
