Merritt was born in Clinton and lived there all of his life until he enlisted in the Marines 10 September 1966, at a Des Moines Recruiting Office. Upon arriving in Vietnam, Merritt was assigned to Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. At the time of his death Merritt was attached to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Tour of duty unknown.
