Description	:	Leander Gilbert was born December 17, 1840 to William P. Gilbert and Elizabeth (Thompson) Gilbert in Lee County, Virginia. On July 28, 1867, he married Clarinda (Clerinda) Creech Hobbs. Clarinda was previously married to Vincent B. Hobbs who was killed in 1864. Clarinda and Vincent had eight (8) children (Henry C, Zachariah T, George W, Mary A, William B, Nancy E, David C, and Vincent). Read More	Leander Gilbert was born December 17, 1840 to William P. Gilbert and Elizabeth (Thompson) Gilbert in Lee County, Virginia. On July 28, 1867, he married Clarinda (Clerinda) Creech Hobbs. Clarinda was previously married to Vincent B. Hobbs who was killed in 1864. Clarinda Creech Hobbs Gilbert passed away on Oct 10, 1878 and is also buried in the Tritt-Gilbert Cemetery near Woodway, Virginia. Leander then married Mary (Molly) Duff on April 10, 1879 with G. B. Wells as the Minister in Lee County, Virgina. Leander and Mary had 6 children: Margaret (Maggie), Palmer, Irvin R, Elbert, Rosa Francis, and Emily. Leander enlisted on 8/13/1862 in the 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry (Company G) and transfered to Company K on Jan 16, 1863. He is listed as "deserted" prior to Jun 30, 1864. He is later found listed as a Corporal in the 47th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Company I (Union Army). The 47th Kentucky Mounted Infantry was organized at Camp Nelson and Irvine, Kentucky mustered in for one year in January 1864. Leander died on January 27, 1908 near Dryden, Lee County, Virginia. Prior to his death, he applied for and received a military pension. His pension documents as well as muster cards can be found at the National Archives as well as online at FOLD3.
