Pallbearers will be Gordon Iseminger, Kenneth Iseminger, Bob Christiansen, Roger Christiansen, Michael Goos and Jerry Bergheim. Leander H. Christiansen was born on June 4, 1919 to Herman H. and Bertina (Bergheim) Christiansen in Madison, SD. He attended schools in the Oldham, De Smet and Carthage, SD areas. After graduating from the eighth grade Chris worked as a farm hand in the Madison and Canton areas for four years. In January of 1939 he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Ft. Meade, SD. In 1940 he married Lorraine Briggs of Spearfish, SD. Chris served two years at Ft. Meade and was then reassigned to Ft. Leavenworth, KS where he served three years obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was reassigned to the 133rd Engineer Combat Battalion which was sent to Europe. Their battalion was involved in combat in France, Luxembourg Bulge, Germany and Austria. Chris was awarded the Silver Star medal, Good Conduct medal, European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Service medal and American Defense Service medal. He was discharged on July 4, 1945 at Ft. Snelling, MN. After his discharge from the military, Chris and Lorraine settled in the Redfield area where he worked as a carpenter and in retail lumber business. He managed various lumber yards for about 20 years. In 1957 he married Arlene Rook at Redfield, SD. They moved to Watertown in 1965 and Chris was employed by BPI for four years, and then by Timmerman Woodworking as a cabinet maker for seven years and then began his saw sharpening service in the basement of his home that lasted more than 20 years. Chris was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. He was also a member of the American Legion in Watertown. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene; his daughter; seven brothers and sisters; a stepdaughter and her husband; and a stepgranddaughter. Chris is survived by his daughter, Nadine (David) Northrup of Chiliquin, OR; his stepson, Terry (Minnie) Rook of Clear Lake, SD; three grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren; seven great grandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
