Visitations will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at First Lutheran Church. LeAnn Kay Tennyson Henslin was born on April 25, 1956, to Larry and Shirley (Schuler) Tennyson in Quinn, SD. Her family later moved to Pierre, SD, where she graduated from high school in 1974. LeAnn attended Dakota State University in Madison, SD, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Art. She later attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Reading. In 1979, LeAnn married Steve Henslin in Spicer, MN. They made their home in Madison and started a family. The family later moved to Spearfish and Wall, SD. While living in Wall, LeAnn taught school north of town and worked for Wall Drug during the summer. In 1991, LeAnn and her children moved to Brookings. She began working as a 6th grade English teacher and eventually a Reading teacher, for the Brookings School District until May 2014. LeAnn looked forward to retirement so she could be a full-time grandma. LeAnn will be remembered for her love, friendship and her dedication to education. She loved her students and enjoyed watching them learn. She started after-school arts programs in both Spearfish and Madison, SD. LeAnn was a talented artist and loved painting with watercolor. She loved traveling to the Black Hills, gardening, making jewelry, decorating her home and spending time with family. She looked forward to every holiday as it meant bringing the family together at her home. Everything she did, she approached with love. Survivors include her mother, Shirley Tennyson of Brookings; children, Chris (Hanna Peterson) Henslin of Minneapolis, Stephanie (Colton Wendland) Henslin of Brookings; granddaughter, Cailyn; sister, Kimarie Sheppard; brother, Tenis (Svetla) Tennyson; two nephews, Eric and Tenis; one uncle, Norman (Shorty) Schuler and one aunt, Arva Schuler. She was preceded in death by her father, Larry Tennyson.
