Leda (Haar) Heupel was born on October 7, 1929 to Walter and Rosina (Kranzler) Haar near Java, SD. Leda grew up on the family farm and attended school in the area. Leda was united in marriage to Arthur Heupel on October 10, 1948 in Aberdeen. They made their home in Long Lake until moving to Aberdeen in 1952. In addition to raising their family Leda worked for the Aberdeen School District for 25 years as a school lunch room cook at Monroe Junior High, Central High School, and Holgate Junior High. Leda was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Aberdeen. Art and Leda loved traveling, fishing, camping (she especially loved singing around the campfire), and spending time with their family and friends. They enjoyed their pastimes together of church activities, dancing, bowling, and playing cards with friends. Grateful for having shared Leda’s life are her children: Shirley (Richard) Miller, Sioux Falls, SD, Debra (Terry) Backous, Glenham, SD, Craig Heupel, Nine Mile Falls, WA, and Neil (Denise) Heupel, Sanford, NC; her grandchildren: Breck (Lyndsey) Miller, Sommer (Kevin) Keplar, Cory (Theresa) Backous, Elissa (Chris) Allen, Kyle Backous, Joel (Holly) Backous, Rachael Heupel, Skye (Stephanie) Heupel, Brianne (Justin) Foell and Kelsey Heupel; great-grandchildren: Claire and Noah Miller, Caden Keplar, Zane Backous, Kate, Nathan, Grace and Nicholas Allen, Mason, Owen, Ian and Maggie Backous, Zachary, Everett, and Declan Heupel, Grayson and Finley Foell; brothers: Leo Haar, and Rollie Haar; and sister, Gertie Hopfinger. Preceding Leda in death are her husband, Art Heupel; parents, Walter and Rose Haar; great-granddaughter, Riley Heupel; brothers, Gary Haar, Harold Haar and Herbert Haar; and sisters Velma Heupel and Lillian Gates. - Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home
