The son of Henry Jesse and Flora Belle Wilson Mewhirter, he was born July 24, 1899, in Pottawattamie County near Elliott, and attended rural schools and Elliott High School. On August 30, 1928, he married Effie Maxell in Atlantic. They farmed around Elliott until 1936 when they took over management of a farm near Atlantic until 1942. Read More	Atlantic News Telegraph – February. 4, 1988 Lee Allen Mewhirter, 88, of Elliott died Wednesday evening at his home. The son of Henry Jesse and Flora Belle Wilson Mewhirter, he was born July 24, 1899, in Pottawattamie County near Elliott, and attended rural schools and Elliott High School. On August 30, 1928, he married Effie Maxell in Atlantic. They farmed around Elliott until 1936 when they took over management of a farm near Atlantic until 1942. Surviving are his wife, Effie; four sons, Thomas L. of San Antonio, Texas, and his wife, Betty; Joe B. of Atlantic and his wife, Barbara; Jack a. of Tampa, Fla., and his wife, Donna; and James R. of Irving, Texas, and his wife, Martha; Also 10 grandchildren, Greg Mewhirter of San Antonio and his wife, jenny; Debra Straw of Johnston and their husband, Steve; Robin Wilson of Jacksonville Fla., and her husband Bill; Jeffery Mewhirter of Austin, Texas; Tracey and Ben Mewhirter of Orlando, Fla.; Leigh Ann, Erin and Jay Mewhirter of Irving, Texas; Also five great-grandchildren, Erica and Kelsey Mewhirter of San Antonio, Texas; Adam and Sarah Straw of Johnston; and Crew Wilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Fay of atlantic and his wife, Grace; and Ross of Scottsbluff, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Illa Mae Hickman, Mable pierce and Helen marsh. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Elliott United Methodist Church. The Rev. William Tomlinson will conduct the services. Burial will be held in Hillside Cemetery at Elliott. A visitation will be held from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Wagler Funeral home in Griswold.
