From the February 7, 1924 Skidmore News, page 1: "Lee Bird Killed Lee Bird, who, with his father 'Pat' Bird, ran a soft drink parlor at Quitman last summer and fall up to about a month ago, met death in Kansas City Tuesday while trying to rob a filling station. The following is taken from the Kansas City Post: 'Even to the end, Lee Bird, 24 years old, slayer, ganster and rowdy, was a bully. Police commenting on the slaying of Bird Tuesday night in a filling station he sought to rob at Linwood boulevard and Montgall avenue, said Bird left Kansas City's stage 'in character,' with the sneer of a bully still playing on his lips. In recalling his career, police gave vent to no show of emotion. Bird was a nemesis to the department and as near an Apache as Kansas City has developed. They are not sorry he is gone. He slugged vigorously and followed his fist with ugly voiced threats that abrogated prosecution. Bird was the son of F. A. 'Pat' Bird, booze selling druggist. The atmosphere engendered by associating with his father's customers may have been a contributing factor in Bird's life. His uncle, Daniel E. Bird, former judge of the circuit court, had stood between Lee Bird and the law many times and each time had exacted a promise of reform. But to Lee Bird there seemed no life but the life of a roisterer.'"
