MILLER Lee Miller was born October 12, 1895 in Audubon County, Iowa. He was the son of William N. and Mary Mahanna Miller. He moved with his family to Coon Rapids at the age of four. Lee grew up in Coon Rapids and attended school there. At the age of 14 he started work at the Garst Store. with his older brother, John, as a carry-out boy. Lee retired from the Garst Store after 75 years. He enjoyed the public and once said he'd held every position at the store from janitor to manager and co-owner. Lee enlisted in the Navy in 1919, for the duration of World War I. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base as a signal man. After returning from the service, Lee married Catherine Mabel Wagner on November 10, 1926 in Immaculate Conception Church, Wexford, Iowa. Being a nature lover and avid hunter and fisherman, Lee and Mabel returned to Wexford countless times. This quiet Irish valley was always a special place for Lee. He enjoyed sharing it with his family and friends for years to come. Lee and Mabel were the parents of two daughters. Marilyn Ann and Nancy Lee. Throughout the years, Lee was involved in the Drum and Bugle Corps, Knights of Columbus, and the Conservation Club. He had been a member of the Annunciation Church for 91 years; he enjoyed singing in the choir and being included in the Church Men's Club. He held a lifetime membership in the local American Legion. After retiring, Lee maintained his hobbies of gardening, fishing, hunting, raising pigeons, and a love for being with, people. He was recognized as the .Carroll County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1982, and was crowned King of the first Raccoon River Days Celebration in Coon Rapids. In later years, he spent time at the Coon Rapids School helping the third grade classes learn of early Coon Rapids history. Lee was blessed with good health and lived in his own home until October of 1990. Illness forced him to enter the Thomas Rest Haven in November of 1990, returning to his own home on February 23,1991. He entered the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines on February 28, 1991 and died there on March 8,1991 at the age of 95 years, 4 months, and 24 days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, in 1973; by his daughter, Marilyn, in 1938; and by a son-in-law, Dean Schoon, in 1977. Also preceding him in death were his parents and the following sisters and brothers: Elizabeth Moylan, Mable Brutsche, Bertha McCarty, Bernice Gilbert, John, Frank, Arthur, Thomas, Bernard, and Joseph Miller. Lee is survived by his daughter, Nancy Schoon, of Coon Rapids; by six grandchildren: Kathy and her husband, Dave Hart, of Coon Rapids; Kristy and her husband, Mark McDermott, of Jamaica; LeeAnn and her husband, Dennis Pittman, of Jamaica; Donald Lee Winnett, of Denver, Colorado; Tracy Schoon, of Des Moines; and Dena Schoon and her fiance, Todd Burgett, of Ames; and an AFS granddaughter, Ariene Pereria, of Costa Rica. Also surviving are ten great-grandchildren: Jason, Eric, Travis, Kyle, and Candice Hart; Megan and Patrick McDermott; and Daniel, Michael, and Ricky Pittman; and other relatives and friends.
