Lee was born on February 2, 1921, in Balfe, Nebraska to Edward Lee Sones and Laura Belle Knight. He grew up on a ranch in the Pole Creek neighborhood, attended grade school at District 129 in Cherry County and graduated from Gordon High School in 1938. Read More	Lee Warren Sones Feb 2,1921-Nov 30,2010 Lee Warren Sones, 89, of Gordon, Nebraska, died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at the Gordon Memorial Hospital. Lee was born on February 2, 1921, in Balfe, Nebraska to Edward Lee Sones and Laura Belle Knight. He grew up on a ranch in the Pole Creek neighborhood, attended grade school at District 129 in Cherry County and graduated from Gordon High School in 1938. One of his favorite stories was when the Gordon High School team played against the Pine Ridge team in the fall of 1937. Lee got kicked in the head and was knocked unconscious. When he came to after the game, everyone had gone home except the coach and a few of the players. The next week, Lee read in the Rushville paper that he had died! When his mother found out what had happened to him, she told him that was the end of his playing football but the following week he was out on the field again. His team went on to win the Northwestern Championship that year. Lee was drafted into the U.S. Air Force in June 1942, attaining the rank of Staff-Sergeant during his 3 ½ years of service. He was stationed in England 2 ½ years during the World War II era. He always enjoyed pointing out to family that he saw Clark Gable often beings they both served in the 351st Bomb Squad. On May 5, 1946, Lee married Kathleen C. Gardner. They worked on numerous ranches in the Sandhills area, eventually moving to Gordon, Nebraska in 1955. Lee worked at various jobs in Gordon until he was hired by the State Department of Transportation and Roads where he was employed for 23 years until his retirement in 1986. Lee was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He took pleasure in playing shuffleboard, pool, hunting and trapping in his younger years. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed playing cards. Not many people could boast that they beat him at a game of cribbage. Lee and his wife, Kathleen, who currently resides at Gordon Country Side Care, celebrated 64 years of marriage in May. Other survivors include his son, Ronald Sones and Kathy, daughter Linda Sones Langer and Ron, sister Evelyn Sones Keller and Willard, brother Lyle Sones and Joyce. He was also blessed with 4 grandchildren, Shad Sones and Brittney, Chris Sones, Bryan Sones and Tori, Jason Langer and Holly and 6 great grand children. Preceding him in death were his son, Dennis Sones, and sister Lilian Sones Latshaw and Erwin. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 3, 2010 with Judith McQuiston officiating. Burial will be at the Gordon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Sones, Gary Sones, Dwaine Sones, Roger Latshaw, Barry Leach and Dean Strong.
