Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Leeland was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Castana, the son of Freeland G. & Henrietta Mae (Chase) Utterback. He was raised & recieived his education in the Castana area, where he graduated from Castana High School in 1955. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army & was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, MO France & New Orleans, LA. He was honorably discharged in November 1958. On June 24, 1960, he married JoAnn Farley at the First Christain Church in Onawa. The couple resided in Castana. He drove the School bus for Castana School & was employed at Wraybil Dehydration in Sloan, Iowa, Firestone Tire Co. in Sioux City & Mac's Chevrolet in Mapleton, Iowa. He also spent some time farming. In 1966, he moved his family to Norfolk, Nebraska to attend Nebraska Christian College for five years & received a BSL degree in preaching. In 1971, the family moved back to Castana, & he started working for the Iowa DOT in Onawa until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served many years as a deacon, elder & most recently chairman of the elders. He enjoyed his church work & also was a handyman. He built the family home, mostly by himself. He loved sports, gardening, traveling, & drafting. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, JoAnn of Castana; a son Randy, Rod, & a daughter Ralinda Uterback.
