Born June 21, 1928 in Sanford, Maine to Clement and Ruth (Downs) Hartley, she attended Sanford and Dover NH schools and graduated from Kennebunk High in 1946. On August 5, 1950, she married Jack D. Simonds of Cape Neddick. Read More	Leila “Lee” Ruth (Hartley) Simonds, 86, of Kennebunk, died unexpectedly Jan 5, 2015 at her home. Born June 21, 1928 in Sanford, Maine to Clement and Ruth (Downs) Hartley, she attended Sanford and Dover NH schools and graduated from Kennebunk High in 1946. On August 5, 1950, she married Jack D. Simonds of Cape Neddick. After graduating from high school, she worked as the assistant to the superintendent of schools for Union #2, which included Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, North Kennebunkport, Wells and North Berwick. Once her children were older, she served as the chairman of the Arundel School Board during the early 1970's, overseeing the expansion of the Mildred L. Day School. Genealogy was her passion, and in addition to her own research, she taught classes on the subject in the Kennebunk and Sanford Adult Education systems as well as the University of Maine Extension Program, and also served as a board member for the South Coast Senior College. She enjoyed traveling, whether it was across the country, her trip to England and Europe, or her frequent trips to the family camp in Glenwood Plantation, Maine. She is survived by her son Michael and his wife Laurea of Somersworth, NH, daughter Jacquelyn of Weare, NH, and son, Thomas and his wife Tori of Scarborough. She is also survived by her sister, Sandra (Goodrich) Jones, of Kennebunk and brother, Wayne Goodrich of Florida, as well as fifteen grandchildren, especially her first and favorite, Angela Calvo of Saco, Maine, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband in 1970, her son Harvey in 2009, and her companion of over thirty-five years, Charles Cole in 2013. At her request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at Arundel Cemetery, North Street, Kennebunkport, on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 2PM.
