Description	:	Lela Holden, 100, of Cherokee died peacefully in her sleep at 11:35 p.m. November 7, 2013 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg. Lela was born near Cherokee Kansas Sept. 12, 1913 and attended Cherokee city schools. She was until recently in good health celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends in September. Lela was born near Cherokee Kansas Sept. 12, 1913 and attended Cherokee city schools. She was until recently in good health celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends in September. She was also preceded in death by her parents Catherine and Joseph Caresio, her brothers Joe Caresio of Los Angeles, California, Dominic Caresio of Joplin, Missouri, John Caresio of Chanute, Kansas and Pete Caresio of Coffeyville, Kansas and her sisters Julia Modlin of Cherokee, Mary Kingrey of Baxter Springs, Kansas and Katy Perry of Cherokee and two sons-in-law Kenneth Swartz of Pittsburg and Kenneth Nutt of McCune, Kansas and her grandson Allen Swartz of Pittsburg. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Swartz of Rogers, Arkansas, Peggy Coltrane (Don) of rural Cherokee, and Vivian Pelham (Jerry) of Tallahassee, Florida. Lela is also survived by her grandchildren Diana Allen of Centerton, Arkansas, Joyce Bartley (Jack) of Bentonville, Arkansas, Anna Nutt of Platte City, Missouri, Shane Nutt of Polo, Missouri, Christopher Pelham of New York City, and Evan Pelham ( Heather) of Tallahassee, Florida. She is also survived by great granddaughters Brandy Allen and her two children of Centerton, Melissa Holland and her three children of Pittsburg, Sarah Swartz and her two children of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, Kelsey and Kiley Nutt of Auburn, Nebraska and great grandson Eric Stanley of Pittsburg and his daughter, as well as many nieces and nephews and their children. Like her parents before her, Lela enjoyed time with her family, her own children, her brothers and sisters and their children. Lela was an excellent cook of many Italian dishes as well as the meat potatoes that her Missouri born husband enjoyed. Lela owned a tavern in Cherokee in two different locations for over forty years but found time and her life reward in her volunteer work with civic, religious, charitable and political organizations serving in almost all instances in leadership roles. She received many awards including being named Kansas Mother of the Year, the Joan M. Finney Outstanding Service Award, and the Kansas Pride Leadership Award for Outstanding Leadership and Superior Performance in Accomplishing Goals. At one time in the eighties Lela held officer positions in 14 organizations and membership in 8 more. Lela traveled to many cities in America and enjoyed visiting Wyoming and Florida and Hawaii. Some of her travels in conjunction with the American Legion Auxiliary were in the company of her good friend Bivian Krout, recently deceased. She liked a new dress and to have her hair done. She liked to laugh and could tell a good joke. In bad times, she found comfort and hope from her religion, but kept life's direction pretty firmly in her own hands and used that confidence to help many others along her 100 year journey. Her last years at Cornerstone Via Christi Village were warm and pleasant ones. Funeral Services will be 10am Monday November 11, 2013 at the St. Bridget's Catholic Church with Fr. Chrysostom Au Maung as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Cherokee Cemetery in Cherokee, KS. Rosary will be recited at 6pm Sunday November 10, 2013 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; friends may call after 12pm Sunday. In lieu of flowers the family ask expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to St. Bridget's Activity Center and/or Via Christi Village Activity Fund. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, KS. Arrangements are by Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, KS.
