Description	:	Gastonia ~ Lela Rose McLean Whitesides, 83, was the eldest child of Thelma Dean Hodge McLean and Leon Leslie McLean, who resided on South New Hope Road. Rose grew up during the Depression on their farm across the street from what is today Ashbrook High School. After graduation, she moved to... Read More	Gastonia ~ Lela Rose McLean Whitesides, 83, was the eldest child of Thelma Dean Hodge McLean and Leon Leslie McLean, who resided on South New Hope Road. Rose grew up during the Depression on their farm across the street from what is today Ashbrook High School. A graduate of Ashley High School where she was a majorette in the band, she went on to Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia were she majored in English, was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was voted Queen of the Mary Court her senior year in college. After graduation, she moved to Atlanta and taught dance in the Atlanta public schools. In the following years, she moved back to Gastonia and while raising three small children, earned a Masters Degree in Education from UNCC. She resumed her teaching career at Gaston Day School, teaching art part-time under J.B. Davis, Headmaster. Later, she moved into the traditional classroom teaching 4th grade where students would learn about their state, local communities, and hometowns. Seeing that there was no literature or text on Gaston County for the children, she wrote a book entitled "People, Pioneers, and Places of Early Gaston County for Young Readers". The book tells about the Indians of the area, the early settlers and the beginnings of Gaston County as a community. It includes pioneer songs, medical remedies, receipts and projects that go along with each chapter. In addition, there is a section that focuses on the Pioneer Site at the Schiele Museum complete with a map, drawings, and extra-circular activities to complete while there and at home. The last fifteen years of her teaching career was spent in the Gaston County public schools. Although she taught in several locations, New Hope Elementary was her favorite where she enjoyed being part of the staff. Rose's lifelong love of art displayed itself in so many areas of her life. She loved drawing and painting and even worked as a commercial artist for her friend Alvin Cain, embellishing his elegant accessories to be sold under the Chelsea House brand. She took art lessons all of her life and even traveled to Italy one summer to perfect her skills in watercolor. Her hobbies and interests also included gardening, dollhouses, and historic preservation. Some of her artwork can still be found in the Dallas Art and History Museum gift shop. She was a former member of the Gastonia Debutante Club and a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia. Interment in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Clover, SC. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia is serving the Whitesides Family.
