He was born on February 16, 1935 in Hillsdale to Elmer Swinford and Bessie (Rusmisel) Swinford. Leland graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1953. Read More	LELAND SWINFORD February 16, 1935-April 19, 2015 Leland Eugene Swinford, 80, of Hillsdale died peacefully Sunday evening, April 19th, at Terre Haute Union Hospital. He was born on February 16, 1935 in Hillsdale to Elmer Swinford and Bessie (Rusmisel) Swinford. Leland graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1953. He married Ruth Ann Ballock on May 29, 1955 at the Salem United Methodist Church, a marriage that would last nearly 60 years and produce four children, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Leland and Ruth were planning a 60th anniversary open house to take place next month. Leland enjoyed and excelled in carpentry and was the owner of Swinford Construction for many years until his retirement. He was well known for building and leaves behind numerous custom made homes and professional businesses within surrounding counties. Leland was instrumental in planning the bi-annual Hillsdale School Reunion for over 20 years until his health began to fail. He was proud of his education and training at Hillsdale School. He stayed in contact with schoolmates through the years, meeting with them bi-monthly at the “Friends” dinner, where they discussed the past, present, and future. Leland enjoyed spending time with his family and especially delighted in seeing his grandchildren grow up. Since his great-grandchildren were born, “Gramps” looked forward to their visits and attending soccer games, birthday parties, and school functions. During the last couple of years, weather permitting, anyone driving on 9th Street in Clinton could observe Leland and Ruth Ann waving at passer byers as they sat in their chairs in front of the 9th Street Feed Mart. He enjoyed talking with friends and customers as they visited the store. He will be remembered for his kind, loving, and gentle manner and generosity for others. He was preceded in death by his parents of Hillsdale and a brother, Harvey Swinford of Valdosta, GA. Leland is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann; children, Marsha Miller (Doug West) of Clinton, Rick (Lori) Swinford of Hillsdale, Leanna (Mitch) Kelley of Hillsdale, and Jeanette Wyres of Clinton, grandchildren, Mitchie Kelley (Sarah) of Kansas City, KA, Andrea (Mark) Stutler of Rosedale, Richie (Brooke) Swinford of Hillsdale, Rob (Andrea) Swinford of Hillsdale, Sarah (Tim) Dean of Terre Haute, Christopher Avenatti of Hillsdale, Autumn Wyres (Keith) of Clinton, Summer Wyres (Kenny) of Clinton, and Candace Kelley (Kyle) of Clinton. Survivors also include great-grandchildren, Rye Leland Swinford, Ava, Ruben, and Raylan Swinford, Alandra, Nahla, and Isabella Stutler, Kierra and Kaya Kelly, and Bryton Wyres. Also his brothers, Warren (Judy) Swinford of Terre Haute, Carl (Sally) Swinford of Hillsdale, Doyne (Lynne) Swinford of Indianapolis, and his only sister, Doris (Fred) Farrington of Clinton; sisters-in-law Lillan Webb of Terre Haute, Louise Ballock of Lansing, IL., Moselle Reiber of Clinton, and Virginia (Ely) Feliciano of Indianapolis, many nieces and nephews and his cat, Meannie. A celebration of Leland’s life will be held at Frist Funeral Home in Clinton. Visitation will be Wednesday April 22 from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Services will be held Thursday, April 23rd at 10 AM with Reverend Leon Myers officiating. Burial will take place at Helt’s Prairie Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mitchie Kelley, Richie Swinford, Rob Swinford, Christopher Avenatti, Mark Stutler, and Tim Dean. Honorary pallbearers include Chuck Connor, Harry Tolley, Bill Osman, Jim Fortune, Art Jones, Arthur Mayes, Mike Lohrman, Earl Carlson, and Darrel Bennett. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Clinton Back Pack Program for area school children or Vermillion County 4-H. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
