Description	:	Leland F. Junge, son of John and Anna Junge, was born February 26, 1918, at Thayer, Neb. He attended rural school in York county. He also attended Sunday school at the Thayer Lutheran church and was confirmed in the same church by Pastor Frederick Evers. When Leland was less than one year old, his father passed away. June 2, 1942, Leland was inducted into the... Read More	Leland F. Junge, son of John and Anna Junge, was born February 26, 1918, at Thayer, Neb. He attended rural school in York county. He also attended Sunday school at the Thayer Lutheran church and was confirmed in the same church by Pastor Frederick Evers. When Leland was less than one year old, his father passed away. His mother later married Erich Tappe, who was like a father to the deceased during his boyhood and early manhood. The family loved on a farm in York county. June 2, 1942, Leland was inducted into the United States Army, serving with distinction as a member of the 36th Infantry division. He served overseas more than two years and received numerous decorations and citations, including a Purple Heart, an Oak Leaf Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead Medal for service in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters. He was in two major invasions at Salerno, Italy and the Riviera in France. He received a citation from his commanding general for exceptionally meritorious service beyond the call of duty in Italy. He was wounded when his unit was defending a bridge in Germany, the bridge around which a war story, "Battleground," was built. He was discharged from military service October 8, 1945. After his discharge from the service, he married Hazel Lemons of Emmetsburg, Ia., and he engaged in farming near Emmetsburg until moving to Geneva in 1950. He took employment as a driver with the Geneva Transfer Company and continued this work until his death. Two children were born to this union, a son, Jerry and a daughter, Diane. September 17, 1953, he married Irene Horner of Fairmont, continuing to reside in Geneva. He died Tuesday, October 7, 1958, at the York General Hospital at the age of 40 years, seven months and 11 days, death resulting from injuries received in an automobile accident Sunday evening, October 5. He is survived by his widow, his two children, his step-father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Erich Tappe of Lincoln; a half-brother, Elroy Tappe of Beatrice and a half-sister, Mrs. William Gordan of Brandshaw. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 10, at the Kritner-Farmer Funeral Home in Geneva. Rev. Alden B. Sears officiated. Oliver Moul of Fairmont sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages." Mrs. A.P. Stewart of Fairmont was accompanist. Pallbearers were associates of the deceased with Geneva Transfer: Charles Brabec, Adolph Girmus, Donald Hurst, Wesley McMullen, Edward Schropfer, and Ernest Sole.
