Lena Gehrig was born in Ohio, February 26th, 1848, and passed away at her residence in Clarence, Mo., at 8:40 o'clock, Wednesday evening, Sept. 7th, 1921, aged seventy-three years, six months and twelve days. Many of her loved ones were with her in her last hours. She had been ill for about two months and her end was not unexpected. Her first marriage was to Alfred Hatfield, and their two sons are: W. A. Hatfield of Canton, Ill., and Alfred B Hatfield of Mason City, Iowa. Her second marriage was to John W. Copenhaver. Their five children are Ernest, Elmer, and Ferdinand Copenhaver, Mrs. Ida McAfee .and Mrs. Sallie Hayes, all of Clarence and vicinity. All highly respected citizens of the community. She professed religion at the age of fourteen and united with the Lutheran Church and was confirmed in its faith. After coming to Shelby County, Missouri, she placed her membership at Morris Chapel with the M. E. Church, South, and there it remained. She was a faithful and consistent christian. She was ready and willing to bear testimony of her faith, and in her last hours gave assurance that she was prepared to depart. She was a devoted mother, a kind neighbor, a self-sacrificing friend. Besides her children above mentioned, she leaves one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bertram, of Wyconda, Mo, eighteen grandchildren, three great grand children, and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her departure. Her husband passed on before, March 3rd, 1914. The funeral services were held, Friday afternoon, Sept. 9th, at Center Street Methodist Church, conducted by Revs. Ward M. Baker and G. A. Mitchell. The remains were taken to Shelbyville cemetery for burial. A large number of relatives and friends being present from Wyconda, as well as Clarence and vicinity.
