Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014 at the Hamlin Reformed Church, rural Castlewood, SD. Burial will be in the Bemis Christian Reformed Cemetery, rural Bemis, SD. Lena Hilda Toering was born September 12, 1927 to Casper "Cap" and Bertha (Bruns) Niemann on a farm in Deuel County, South Dakota where she was raised and received her education. On April 15, 1952, Lena was united in marriage to Henry Toering and for a short time they lived near Dempster, SD before moving to a farm in Deuel County. In 1960, the family moved to a farm in Brookings County, SD where they farmed until moving back to farm in Deuel County in 1966. During this time Lena worked on the farm and raised their family. On June 13, 1990, Henry passed away. Lena remained on the farm near Bemis and she began working at the Deuel County Extension office where she worked until 2006. At the age of 65, she was very proud of completing her GED. In 2009, she moved to the Castlewood Assisted Living and remained there until June 24, 2010 when she entered the Estelline Nursing Home. Lena passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 14 days. She was a member of the Hamlin Reformed Church and was a previous member of the Bemis Christian Reformed Church. Lena was a hardworking, loving and caring person. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and crafts. Lena loved spending time with her family; children, grandchildren and her mother Bertha. She is lovingly remembered by her 8 children: Carl (Cindy) Toering, Branson, MO, Don (RJ) Toering, Goodwin, SD, Joyce (Brad) Kunde, Clear Lake, SD, Joan (Dave) Niemann, Clear Lake, SD, Laura (Kelly) Sieh, Clear Lake, SD, Gary (Brenda) Toering, St. Francis, MN, Alvin Toering, Clear Lake, SD and Lois (Mark) Joseph, Aberdeen, SD; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Jurgen (Jeanette) Niemann, Clear Lake, SD, Henry (Judi) Nieman, Watertown, SD and Leo (Arlo) Niemann, Clear Lake, SD; 3 sisters: Kathryn Taken, Watertown, SD, Henrietta (Andy) Molengraaf, Volga, SD and Judy (George) Harbolt, Park City, KS and many nieces and nephews. Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry; and an infant daughter Sharon.
