She graduated from Hartley Public School where she took normal training, then attended Cedar Falls Teachers College. She taught country school for three years at Harrison #1 in northwest Iowa. She was a member of Teachers Association and sang in the Oseola Teachers Choir. After her marriage, she was a substitute teacher and a tutor for the handicapped. Lena was united in marriage to Richard Hoffman on May 3, 1941 in Sanborn, IA. They had two children, Janice and Glen. She and her husband farmed north of Hartley, IA until they retired to Marshalltown in 1983. She was active in the Altar and Rosary Society and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in Hartley and attended the State Convention in Kansas City, MO. She sang in the choir in Hartley and Marshalltown and enjoyed crocheting, traveling, and spending time with her family. Lena will be missed by her husband of 71 years, Richard, a daughter, Sister Janice Hoffman, OSF of Cherokee, IA, a son, Glen Hoffman of Marshalltown, two granddaughters with their families; Hayley, Kai, Claire, Cameron Kouba of Marshalltown and Holly, Tom, Logynn, Evan, Drake, Zeuthen of Ankeny, IA; two sisters-in-law; Mildred Hoffman of Sioux City, Norma Hoffman of Sibley and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Werner Burkhart, and two sisters, Myrtle Hasara and Lela Burkhart.
