Description	:	Caroline "Lena" Schleselmann was the fourth daughter born to John Frederick Schleselmann and Wilhelmina Stark. She survived a case of smallpox that killed her father in 1882. In the summer of 1887, following her mother's marriage to William Dargeloh, she was placed with the Wilhelm Woebbecke family to live. She helped with chores on the farm in I precinct and attended the district 71 school about a half mile from the Wobbecke house. Read More	Caroline "Lena" Schleselmann was the fourth daughter born to John Frederick Schleselmann and Wilhelmina Stark. She survived a case of smallpox that killed her father in 1882. In the summer of 1887, following her mother's marriage to William Dargeloh, she was placed with the Wilhelm Woebbecke family to live. She helped with chores on the farm in I precinct and attended the district 71 school about a half mile from the Wobbecke house. While at school in the afternoon of January 12th, 1888, the temperature started dropping and snow began to fall, driven by strong winds – the start of the Blizzard of 1888. On the way home from school in blinding snow, Lena got lost and collapsed in a stubble field, covering herself with her cloak. She was found the next morning just before dawn by Wilhelm Woebbeke, who carried her back to the house. Suffering from gangrene, her right foot was amputated above the ankle. Her story was publicized in local papers and a support fund was established for her, facilitated by George Burkett of Seward, who was later appointed as her guardian. She graduated from public schools in Lincoln and attended Union College. In 1901, she married George Schopp. She was buried in her wedding dress when she died in 1903.
