Later she attended the Methodist Church in Edgewood before attending the Congregational Church. Lenora Fenstermann was born October 19, 1906, to John Kraus and Anna Sunderman, the second child in the Sunderman family, on a farm near Volga in Clayton County, Iowa. Lenora's brother, Harley H. Lenora Fenstermann was born October 19, 1906, to John Kraus and Anna Sunderman, the second child in the Sunderman family, on a farm near Volga in Clayton County, Iowa. Lenora's brother, Harley H. Kraus (b. April 21, 1902, d. May 23, 1983) married Laura Behrens (b. 1903, d. 1987). Harley and Lenora were the only children of the family. Her grandparents were Herman and Elsie (Holscher) Sunderman and Henry and Elizabeth (Stemmer) Kraus. Henry and Elizabeth lived in the Elkport, Iowa, area but are now buried at Klemme, Iowa. On April 7, 1927, Lenora married Howard Ellsworth Fenstermann (b. Dec. 29, 1902), son of Henry Herman John Fenstermann and Emma Mate Hildebrandt, on her parents farm 1.5 miles east of Wood Center, Iowa, Rev. A. H. Meyer officiating. Lenora and Howard were the proud parents of twin boys born on July 2, 1936. However, the joy was short because Arlen Harley Fenstermann died July 2, 1936, and Arlo Howard Fenstermann died October 5, 1936. They had no additional children, but took great joy in their nieces and nephews. Lenora's childhood was spent in the rural areas of Volga, Littleport, and Elkport near other Kraus relatives, where she attended grade school. Lenora and Howard started farming in 1927 on the John Wessel farm northeast of Wood Center, farming there for three years. In 1930 they moved to the Arthur and Hugh Parker farm southeast of Greeley, Iowa, farming there for seven years, before returning to the Wood Center area. Wood Center, Iowa, played an important role in Lenora's life. The general store was operated by Kelly Rulon and Gilmore Brothers in 1878. In 1892 Kelly bought out his partner and named the store K. Rulon and Sons, for sons Claude and Erle. The store was also a home. Anna (Rulon) Ash was born there. The first postmaster of the store was R. G. Ash in 1880. In 1900 Claude Rulon built a new store and house just east of the old store. The post office continued until 1910 when rural free delivery commenced for the area. Between 1917 and 1919 Otto H. Berens purchased the business. Howard Fenstermann was one of Otto's clerks. On October 13, 1936 Otto sold his 18 year business to Howard and Carl Fenstermann. Carl was Howard's brother. Lenora was an active participant in the operation of the store. The store was sold in 1947 to Lawrence Evans and later to William Reimer. The last owner was from Manchester and eventually tore the building down and built a house in Manchester with the wood. In 1980 Joe Totman had a business on the site. Lenora always had many memories of the store years. Lenora and Howard were active in the Woodland and Pomona Granges. They enjoyed community events and often hosted overnight stays for their nieces and nephews. While living in Edgewood, Lenora worked at several different businesses until she retired. She was well known around Edgewood and had many friends. She was a quiet person who loved her relatives, enjoyed a neat and orderly house, and always had a friendly smile and laugh. She was proud of the fact that she managed alone in her home until she was in the middle of her 97th year. Survivors include 8 Fenstermann nieces and nephews: Ruth (Casey)Tucker of Cedar Falls, IA; Robert (Mary)Fenstermann of Red Oak; IA, Duane (Marlene) Fenstermann of Decorah, IA; Virginia (Marion) Moser of Garrison, IA; Rita (Walt) Ruth of Janesville, IA; Francille (Charles) Martinec of Littleton, CO; Russell (Maurine) Fenstermann of Lee's Summit, MO; and Wendall (Becky) Fenstermann of Brooklyn, WI. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her two infant children, her parents, and cousins.
