Born on May 21, 1934, on a farm outside of York, NE, Leo attended Saint Joseph?s School there, graduating from high school in 1952. He attended Saint Benedict's College in Atchison, KS for two years before joining the U.S. Army, where he served for two years. He graduated from Peru State College in Nebraska City in 1958 with a degree in business. Newly married to the former Patricia Buckholz, he moved to Sioux City, IA, where he began his career in the insurance industry at Columbia Mutual. A year later, he moved to Council Bluffs and then joined Greater Iowa Life Insurance Company in Des Moines. In 1967, after Greater Iowa was acquired by Life Investors, Leo was named administrative vice president and moved his family to Marion, IA, beginning his more than 30-year association with Life Investors/AEGON USA. In 1980, Leo became president of South Central Underwriting in Chattanooga, TN, a job he held until he returned to Cedar Rapids as executive vice president of the Individual Division of AEGON USA. In 1994, Leo was appointed president of the NOL Division of AEGON in Little Rock, AR. He retired in 1999. He served on the Board of Directors of Life Investors and was an original member of the Regis-LaSalle Foundation in Cedar Rapids. A devoted Catholic, Leo was an active, participating member of every parish to which he belonged. Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; his parents, Leo D. and Eileen, and his brother Dan. He is survived by his children: Gerianne (Kevin) Coffey; Philip (Natali) Barry; Brigid (Mark) Skoog; Erin Barry and Angela (Jim) Lensing; his fiancee, Mary Jo Kurten; his sisters Anne (Robert) Rissi and Kathleen Magrath; and twelve grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 295 Balearic, Hot Springs Village, at 5 p.m. with a prayer service to follow at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 31 at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy or the Xavier Foundation in Cedar Rapids.
