Description	:	Leo Edward Gunther was always active. When he was 17 he was a depot agent out of McLaughlin. The next year, he joined the U.S. Army in July 1944 and served in Europe during World War II. His active service in the military ended in July of 1946, at which time he returned to work for the railroad. The next year, he joined the U.S. Army in July 1944 and served in Europe during World War II. His active service in the military ended in July of 1946, at which time he returned to work for the railroad. After living in McLaughlin he was transferred to Hettinger, N.D., where he remained until shortly before suffering a stroke that left his right side paralyzed in December of 1973 at the age of 47. Through intensive rehabilitation, hard work, determination and attendance for eight years at Adult Education and a special teacher, he was able to regain his ability to walk, talk, read, write and do math. He loved to read the daily newspapers and take daily walks to maintain his strength and mobility. As he walked, he could visit with people and he would pick up trash to keep his area neat. When he was no longer able to walk, the Veterans Administration supplied him with a motorized scooter. During nice weather, his daily ritual was to scoot down the highway, over the railroad tracks and into the park near Mirror Lake to watch the geese and have his daily soda pop. The townspeople said they could almost set their clocks by his routine. His health issues made it necessary for Leo and his wife, Bernie, to sell their home and move into a smaller apartment, and from there, because his needs for care increased, he moved into the Hillcrest Care Center in April of 1996. Leo remained at the care center until his death on Jan. 14, 2007, at the age of 80. Card playing was Leo's favorite pastime and it helped maintain his mental sharpness. In the community, Leo was service oriented and civic minded. Outside his regular work hours as a depot agent, he volunteered his time to serve on the Scranton School Board for 13 years, and helped out with many activities needed in the small towns of Gascoyne and Scranton. During the Vietnam era, Leo was appointed as a Government Appeal Agent for the Selective Service Board, and later as the Advisor to the Registrant. Presidents Nixon in 1973 and Gerald Ford in 1975 awarded Leo Certificates of Appreciation for his five years service to the Selective Service Board. After moving to Hettinger, Leo became very involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. He served as Quartermaster of Post 6300 from 1968 to 1973, was appointed as the National Aide-De-Camp in 1968, and in October of 1973 was appointed National Chief of Staff for the VFW of the United States. Had he not suffered a stroke in the prime of his life, his service to the VFW and his country would have been the greatest achievement of his life. He was born in Reeder, N.D., on April 15, 1926, to Carl and Helen (Maychrzak) Gunther and grew up on a farm south of Gascoyne. His family moved to Mobridge in 1941 so his father could work for the railroad. Leo continued the family legacy when he began working for the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul line. On Oct. 28, 1947, he married Bernadine "Bernie" Reis. They lived in McLaughlin for a short time until settling in Gascoyne for the next 16 years. Four children were born during this time, sons Gary and Alan, a daughter, Peggy, and an infant son who died at birth. Leo leaves Bernie, his wife of nearly 60 years of Hettinger; son Gary (Sally) Gunther of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Peggy Gunther of Hettinger; two granddaughters, Krista (Rob) Warbis of Hettinger and Jenna (Marc) Erickson of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Leah Gunther of Hettinger; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Ty and Cade Warbis of Hettinger; brother Clarence (Debbie) Gunther of Aurora, Colo.; 23 nieces and 10 nephews; two aunts, Claudia Maychrzak and Barbara Maychrzak, both of Scranton; and many other relatives. His parents, son Alan, his infant son and a brother, Walter Gunther, preceded him in death. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Leo on Friday, Jan. 19, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger. Father Chad Gion was celebrant. Military honors were provided by the Johnson-Melary American Legion Post No. 115. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Scranton with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Hettinger in charge of arrangements. Mobridge Tribune January 24, 2007
