Description	:	Leo Ferdinand Nickel, 86, a resident of Douglas and formerly of Torrington died Sept. 21 at his home. He was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Axtell, Neb., the son of Ferdinand and Katherine (Shanahan) Nickel. He was the third of six boys. He was raised and educated in Axtell, 17 miles south of Kearney, Neb., and graduated from Kearney High in 1942. During that time he met and... Read More	Leo Ferdinand Nickel, 86, a resident of Douglas and formerly of Torrington died Sept. 21 at his home. He was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Axtell, Neb., the son of Ferdinand and Katherine (Shanahan) Nickel. He was the third of six boys. He was raised and educated in Axtell, 17 miles south of Kearney, Neb., and graduated from Kearney High in 1942. From high school he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps (USMC), where he served during World War II. After three years he returned home, worked on the family farm and raised cattle. During that time he met and married his wife, Jane (Shanley) Nickel, of 60 years on Feb. 13, 1951. He remained in the USMC reserves and was recalled during the Korean conflict serving for 15 months. When he returned from his tour of duty oversees, he began farming and raising Hereford cattle for himself. Leo and his wife then started their family and purchased their own farm and cattle ranch in Taylor, Neb. After he sold his farm, he continued his career with the Wyoming Hereford Ranch, working in the show barn under Art Killian. He then began working for Chamberlain Ranches as herdsman. During the next nine years he bought and sold cattle in the United States, Canada and England, and this brought Chamberlain Ranches to one of the most notable Hereford Ranches in the region. His love of Hereford cattle was passed on to his children and with his help his children showed cattle all over the Rocky Mountain Region. He was also influential with other 4-H and FFA children, who have continued to show cattle throughout their lives. His career continued at the von Forell Hereford Ranch in Wheatland and Gene Peterson Herefords in Livingston, Mont. He retired at age 65, and even after retirement, he took an active part in his children's Hereford cattle operations. In retirement, Leo also enjoyed taking trips with his wife and friends and spending time with his two children, four grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Leo is survived by his wife, Jane Nickel of Douglas; children, Giselle (Jim) Grimes of Douglas and Kevin (Jackie) Nickel of Torrington; grandchildren, Michele (Curt) Ogburn of Torrington, Erin (Justin) Phillips of Camano, Wash., Alex Grimes of Douglas and Alan Grimes of Douglas; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Gabe Phillips and Dutch Ogburn. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Leo Patrick Nickel and Timothy James Nickel; and five brothers, Tom, Jerry, Don, Bernard and Paul Nickel.
