Leo passed away Monday, May 14, 2012 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen. Blessed be his memory. Leo J. Kallas was born on April 7, 1918 at Leola, SD to John and Cecelia (Hartman) Kallas. This is the area where he was raised and attended school. Leo worked on the family farm until 1941, when he moved to Tacoma, WA and accepted a Civil Service job. Leo was united in marriage to Amelia Mae Kline on October 17, 1944. Their union was blessed with six wonderful children. The family moved to Mason City, IA in 1955, where Leo was employed at the Armour Packing Plant for several years. In 1960 Leo began his 45-year career with Neo Life Vitamin Company, where he worked as a sales representative and served on the Board of Directors. He enjoyed his work immensely and made many lasting friendships and won several awards. Leo and his family moved to Aberdeen in 1964. He became a resident of Avera Mother Joseph Manor in February of 2012 and continued to reside there until the time of his death. Leo was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen and was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1944. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and working in his garden. Surviving Leo are his wife, Amelia Kallas; children, Karen (Jim) Steidl, Kathy (Jim) Thomson, Lee (Trish) Kallas, Lenn (Gayle) Kallas and Lance (Lynn) Kallas; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Leo is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Rod Schuster; one brother, Dominic Kallas; and five sisters.
