He was struck by a bolt of lightning Monday afternoon about four o'clock and was instantly killed. The young man, who lives with his mother, Mrs. Jos. Vandewalle, and three brothers and two sisters on a farm three miles east of town, had been working on a farm fence, when the storm came up. He went to the barn and was helping his brother get the horses in when the bolt struck him with fatal results. One of Leo's brothers came to his assistance immediately but nothing could be done. Leo was an exemplary young man, well liked by his associates, and his sudden taking away is a shock to all. The family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. Funeral services were held at the St. Anthony's church this morning at nine o'clock. ***** Same newspaper, April 28, 1927, p. 1, col. 2 Obituary Leo Vandewalle was born May 10, 1905, and died at the place of his birth, three miles east of Cedar Rapids, on Monday afternoon, April 18, 1927, at the age of 21 years, 11 months, and 9 days. He was the son of Mrs. Lenia Vandewalle. Besides his mother he leaves three brothers and two sisters to mourn his early departure. They are: Peter, Joe and Charles at home, Mrs. Fred Strotman of Aurora, Nebr., and Mrs. Alfred Schuele of Cedar Rapids. His father died in the year 1914. Leo was an ideal young man and his departure will be keenly felt by large number of friends and relatives. Funeral services which were held at the St. Anthony's church Thursday morning were largely attended.
