Read More	~ WW I VETERAN ~ Leo Bekman was born May 28, 1901 in Orange City, Iowa, the oldest of 5 children born to Henry and Anna Klein Bekman, both Dutch immigrants. He was educated in the Orange City Public Schools, the Reformed Church Academy as an apprentice in his father's tailor shop and at the Sioux City College of Business. He served in the U.S. Navy on destroyer duty for 18 months during World War I. He came to Ida Grove to work as a tailor and dry cleaner for Keith's Laundry and Dry Cleaners. On August 8, 1927, he and Clara Meier, a teacher in the Ida Grove schools, were united in marriage. The Bekmans operated farms in both the Schaller and Ida Grove vicinities. Since 1943, Mr. Bekman was actively involved in sales and consulting work. For the past 23 years, he was associated with Waddell and Reed, Inc. of Kansas City. Mr. Bekman was a man of many interests. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends and was an avid golfer. He worked for the organization and was a charter member of the Ida Grove Golf Club. He was a firm believer in service to his fellow man and exemplified this belief many times throughout his life. He was active in all phases of American Legion work, serving as local service officer for many years, organizing the local office of the Ida County Soldiers Relief Commission with his wife following World War II. He served the Legion as Schaller post commander, Sac County Commander, 9th district Commander, and state vice commander. He was very proud of his service on the Ida Grove Flood Control Committee which worked with the Corps of Engineers accomplishing the harnessing of the Odebolt Creek. He and his wife combined efforts to teach citizenship classes for person preparing for U.S. Citizenship. The Americana Red Cross was a strong interest, and he served for many years as home service chairman. In 1966, he became county chairman. All facets of Red Cross service, including the blood bank, water safety classes and communication for servicemen and their families, were important to him. He spent many hours a week in this volunteer capacity, especially during the Vietnam conflict.
