Dwyer, son of Matthew and Grace (Mignery) Dwyer, was born July 14, 1923, at their ranch on the Beaver Creek west of Elgin. He attended rural school at District 3 in Wheeler County through the eighth grade and St. John’s High School in Petersburg, graduating in 1940. After high school, he joined his father in ranching. He married Dorothy Ann Buelt on Nov. 25, 1947, at St. Boniface Church in Elgin. They lived on the ranch west of Elgin, and Leo continued raising Hereford cattle and hay. Dorothy passed away in 1994. On Dec. 27, 1995, Leo married Dorothy Ann (Jackson) Anderson at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Bloomfield. They retired and moved in to Elgin in 1997. Leo was a member of St. Boniface Church and Knights of Columbus in Elgin for most of his life. He served on the Wheeler County District 3 School Board for 18 years, as director of the Sandhills Cattlemen’s Association for 12 years, St. Boniface School Board, Nebraska Beef Industry Council and as a PCA director for several years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing. Leo is survived by his wife Dorothy of Elgin; five children, Sheila (Patrick) Clark of Birdseye, Ind., Patricia (Vincent) Spieker of Elgin, Matthew (Jan) Dwyer of Hastings, Michael (Mary ) Dwyer of Bartlett, Bridget Dwyer of Jasper, Ind.; three stepdaughters, Deb (Mike) Hoffman of Bloomfield, Dee (Gary) Walters of Shelby, Darla (Dan) Schiefelbein of Columbus; 23 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy (Buelt); one son, Patrick Dwyer; one brother, Paul Dwyer; two sisters, Pauline (Hal) Golden and Velda (Otto) Schindler; one granddaughter, Grace Dwyer; and one step-granddaughter, Brooke Scott.
