When Leola was two weeks old the family traveled by immigrant train to Chase County and settled in the Blanche Community. They lived in a tent with a board floor and later added a frame room. When Leola was two weeks old the family traveled by immigrant train to Chase County and settled in the Blanche Community. They lived in a tent with a board floor and later added a frame room. In 1925, her family moved to Imperial. Leola graduated from Chase County High School in 1934. After completing 'normal training' she taught in one-room, all-grades rural schools for three years. One of those schools was a mile from the Moody farm. Subsequently she graduated from Hastings Business College and then served as Deputy Clerk Treasurer at the Chase County Courthouse. On Feb. 14, 1942, Leola married Woodrow Moody at her home in Imperial. That fall Woodrow enlisted in the Army. Leola lived and worked in Tacoma, Wash., where Woodrow was stationed, until he was transferred overseas to England and France. Leola then moved to Denver and worked nights as a dispatcher at the Union Pacific Station. During the days while she was in Denver, Leola enrolled in millinery classes and became an accomplished designer and creator of women's hats. Leola returned to their farm to help at harvest time. After Woodrow's three years of service in WWII, they returned to the Moody farm. One daughter, Vonna Jo, was born to this union in 1949. During her time on the farm Leola was accomplished in many areas. She was well organized, meticulous and witty with a quick mind. She was kind and generous and willing to give others her full attention. During her 60 years as a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School and was active in UMW. She was an excellent seamstress, refinished furniture played the piano and organ, and kept excellent farm records. She loved her vegetable garden and rock garden. Making chokecherry jelly was one of her specialities. Many visitors to the farm long remember her delicious meals. She dedicated many hours to pronouncing spelling words for her daughter. Leola and Woodrow built a home at Bella Vista, Ark., and enjoyed new friends and a different environment several times a year for over 20 years. Leola passed away on Sept. 19, 2008, at Wauneta, Neb., at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, and adopted brother, Charlie Smith. Woodrow preceded her in death in September, 1998. Survivors include her daughter, Vonna Jo Moody and life partner Howard Kaler; brother Ansel Smith and Connie of Madison, Minn.; sister Jeanette Blackledge and Richard of Idaho Falls, Idaho; three nieces, Ann Smith of Bloomington, Minn, Susan James and Ken of Long Beach, Calif., Mary Lou Blackledge-Kortz and Don of Greenwood Village, Colo., and nephew Mark Smith and Elsa of Palm Desert, Calif., and their families. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta with Pastor Judith Dye officiating. Mrs. Diana Ham was organist and congregational hymns chosen were "Amazing Grace," "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "Hymn of Promise." Casketbearers were Wesley Wheeler, Rod Wheeler, Karl Polly, Roger Miller, Tom Cameron and Dr. Paul Grow. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta.
