Leola Ione (Davis) Veatch, along with her twin sister, Viola Leona Davis, was born on January 16, 1925, at her parents W.W. and Merna (Sullivan) Davis farm, which was located between Kent, and Lenox. Leola Ione (Davis) Veatch, along with her twin sister, Viola Leona Davis, was born on January 16, 1925, at her parents W.W. and Merna (Sullivan) Davis farm, which was located between Kent, and Lenox. Ione, as everyone called her, attended country school till 1935. She then entered the 5th grade in Kent, when her parents moved to Kent. Ione graduated from Kent after two years of high school. She then attended Creston High School, graduating with the "Class of 1942". During her high school days Ione spent a lot of time helping her dad, W.W. Davis, in the Farmer's Co-op Hardware Store in Kent. Ione would deliver feed, help customers and enjoyed driving to other towns to bring back seed and feed for the store. She also helped out at the Kent Post Office and the Kent Telephone Office. Her junior year of high school, she began working at the Kent State Savings Bank, where she became assistant cashier. Ione worked there until she left to get married. On September 15, 1944, Ione was united in marriage to Staff Sargent Howard Clinton Veatch, at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Manhattan, Kansas. Howard was stationed at Fort Riley. From there the couple moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where Howard was transferred. In 1945, Howard was shipped overseas to Japan, so Ione returned to her parents' home, until Howard's discharge on January 8, 1946. During the time she stayed with her parents, a daughter, Carol Ann, was born, on July 25, 1945. Ione still had in her possession the cable that was sent to Howard, informing him of his new baby daughter. Ione and Howard spent their entire marriage life farming around Lenox, Kent, Greenfield, Nevinville, Cromwell, and Creston. While they were farming and living on her parents farm southwest of Kent, their son, Hal Dean, was born on July 10, 1951. That excruciating feat was rewarded with roses! On June 4, 1973, Ione started working part time at Greater Regional Hospital, as a night clerk and went full time at the hospital on October 28, 1973. Ione retired from the hospital after 25 years of service. In 1979, Ione and Howard purchased an acreage west of Creston. After Howard's death, on April 9, 1983 Ione continued to live on the acreage and work at the hospital. At this time, she started renting a room to college girls. Of all the girls she has had living with her, 99.9% were still in contact with her. She was "Grandma Ione" and "Great Grandma Ione" to them and their families. She was also "Grandma" to their friends. Ione would always say… "No one can have too many Grandmas". In 1997, Ione sold her acreage and moved to Quiet Harbor Estates in Creston, where she has enjoyed being a friend to everyone who resides there. She enjoyed doing whatever needed to be done for a friend. Ione was always first to offer a hand. In January of 2010, she moved in with her son, Hal Dean and Deb, to take care of Deb after she broke her leg. No one could ask for a better nurse than Ione. In August of the same year, Hal Dean and Deb convinced her that she needed to permanently live with them for her own health reasons. In January of 2013, Ione moved to Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. She was needing the skilled care that was provided by them. It did not take Ione long to become friends with many of the people residing there. During the three years that Ione lived with her son, Hal Dean and his wife Deb., she went to watch her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Conard, ride in her saddle club's horse shows. The only shows she missed where when it was very, very hot outside. And yes, she grumbled about missing those shows! Ione has had many, many friends in her life, and she has been a very special friend to everyone. There is not a child anywhere that could not call her "Grandma". She was a woman who had so much for everyone. Her giving and kind nature are only two of the great things about this woman. Not only was she "Grandma" to many, she was also known as "MOM" to a few extra women, who needed a loving mom. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren always showed through. Ione had so much love to give. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Ann (husband Dick) Reeve of Creston and her son, Hal Dean (wife Deb) Veatch of Creston; her sister , Alice Cambell of Adel grandchildren, Steven & Michelle Rhine, Rick & Wendy Reeve, Annette & Pete Faux, David Reeve, Heather Rogers, Clinton Veatch, JD Conard, Robyn & Jon Cornick; great-grandchildren Gavin and Jordan Rhine, Elizabeth, Cassandra and Hayden Reeve, Elsie and Sullivan Faux, Elizabeth Conard, Madison and Jack Veatch, and Jacob Cornick and James Lander; "extra" daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren" Sharon Britten, Deb Veatch, Judy Arroya, Pam & Rob Hoffman (Clarissa, Cassandra, Rebecca and Lydia); Laurie & Jimmy Stringer (Jessica, Jenna, LeAnna and Laurisa), Tony & (the late Vicki) Gross (Josh, Lucas), Corinne & Tony Ashbeck (Andrew, Jaedyn and Camden), Heather Brown (Chance and Spencer), Troy & Amy Britten (Kenzie, Connor and Kaycie), Troy & Corina Heopker (Dylan, Kaylee); many relatives, and many, many friends and loved ones.
