Steele, 93, of Wenatchee, WA, died with family at her side, Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at RiverWest Assisted Living Facility. She was born to Minnie and Bruce Wyant in Maskell, NE, on February 9, 1918, moving to Ree Heights, SD, as a young child. Leola graduated from Ree Heights High School in 1936, and married Ralph Steele on October 7, 1938, at Ponca, NE. During their years in Nebraska, they were farmers before moving to Leavenworth, WA, in 1948. Ralph and Leola owned and operated Cascade Lumber Company until 1974, then in semi-retirement years, they spent their winters in Apache Jct., AZ, and summers at their home in Leavenworth. They moved to Wenatchee in 1988 and after Ralph's death in 2009, she moved into RiverWest Assisted Living Community. Leola was a 61 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She and Ralph were members of the Leavenworth Golf Club for over 50 years, where Leola was heavily involved with the Ladies' Division. Leola spent many wonderful hours supporting her children's school activities and their Leavenworth Winter Sports Club endeavors. She loved golf, fishing, playing cards, and was a regular at the Wenatchee bowling centers. Leola leaves the valley a legacy of crocheted Christmas Angels and fuzzy peanut brittle. Survivors include her four children: Dorothy (Terry) MacDonald of Chandler, AZ, Barbara (Larry) Brown and Jim (Portia) Steele of Wenatchee, and Ron (Julie) Steele of Salt Lake City, UT; and her sisters, Charlene Joslin of Overland Park, KS and Nancy (Roger) Blatchford of Onawa, IA. Leola was blessed to have 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and especially friends and extended family in the Wenatchee Valley. Leola was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Eston; her sisters, Evaon and Velma; and by her husband of 71 years, Ralph. The family gives special thanks to the staff at RiverWest for their comforting and loving care afforded to our mother during her stay, and thanks Karl Lambert, ARNP, for his sincere medical care. At Leola's request, there will be No Funeral Services. Inurnment took place at Mountain View Cemetery, Leavenworth, where she joined her beloved Ralph in the shadow of Wedge Mountain.
