Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 A.M. Thursday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lectors will be grandsons, Jason Mueller and Nicholas Halbur. Gift Bearers will be her sisters, Rita Prenger and Margaret Hyland. Eucharistic Ministers will be Denise Mueller and Dr. Martin Halbur. The St. Anthony Nurses Alumnae Association will form an honor guard at the church. Casket Bearers will be grandchildren, Brent Simons, Tyler Simons, Meghan Shelley, Michael Mueller, Jason Mueller, Nicholas Halbur, and Amy Halbur. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by Holy Spirit Parish. Mrs. Simons was born on July 28, 1922, at Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of A.H. and Josephine (Kanne) Baumhover. She spent most of her lifetime in the Carroll community and attended St. Lawrence School and graduated from St. Angela Academy in 1940 and graduated from the St. Anthony School of Nursing in 1945 as a Registered Nurse. She was employed briefly in Portland, Oregon, as a nurse and then returned to Carroll and worked as an office nurse for the Carroll Medical Center. On August 16, 1951, she was married to Elmer Simons at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll with Father Arthur Poeckes officiating. The couple farmed east of Carroll for many years and then moved to Carroll. She was a former member of St. Lawrence Parish and currently was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and St. Anthony Nurses Alumnae Association. Mrs. Simons enjoyed her family, reading, walking, and spending time at her home. Survivors include her husband, Elmer; children, Greg and his wife, Connie, Denise and her husband, Ron, Claudia and her husband, Joe, and Monica; grandchildren, Brent, Tyler and his wife, Sarah, Meghan and her husband, Troy, Michael and his wife, Kyann, Jason and his wife, Kristen, Nicholas and his wife, Joanna, and Amy and her fiancé, Mark; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard and his wife, Mary; sisters, Margaret, Ruth, and Rita; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Denis Baumhover and Alfred Baumhover and his wife Florence; brothers-in-law, Mylo Hyland, Louis Prenger Sr., and Marvin Simons; a sister-in-law, Helen Collison and her husband Ned; and father and mother-in-law, Henry J. and Clara Simons.
