Steffen Mortuary in Battle Creek is in charge of the arrangements. He departed this life for his heavenly home on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek. Leon was born on November 22, 1925 to Alvin and Anna (Schwarz) Koopman on a farm south of Pilger, Nebraska and was baptized into the Lord’s family on December 13, 1925 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Wisner, Nebraska by Rev. W.E. Harms. In 1934, when Leon was in 3rd grade, the family moved to a farm north of Battle Creek, Nebraska. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School in Battle Creek and confirmed his Christian faith on May 21, 1939 with Pastor A.H. Schleef. Leon graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1943, and served in the United States Army with the occupation forces in Japan from 1945-1946, at the end of WW II. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Stuckwisch on April 20, 1947, and moved to a farm just one mile south of his parents. Leon was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek and the American Legion Post 75. At St. John, he belonged to the choir and served as an elder, trustee and school board member. He played first base on the Battle Creek town baseball team for many years, bowled in a league in Norfolk and enjoyed golf in his later years. He also coached youth baseball and umpired many games. He served on the Madison County Extension Board, the Fair Board and was a leader of the Dry Hollow 4-H Club. He also joined the Senior Citizen Bowling League. He learned how to play the trombone in high school and played with the Battle Creek Booster Band, the Norfolk Polka Kings and the Battle Creek Brass. The BC Brass continues to play at many area nursing homes and Norfolk Senior Center dances. He is survived by his children David (Jan) of Grafton, WI, Martin (Peg) of Scribner, NE, Douglas (Becky) of Hastings, NE and Mary Ellen Swim of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren Nancy (Adam) Glatczak of Sheboygan, WI, Joanna (Jason) Eden of Streamwood, IL, Natalie (Luke) Meyers of Superior, NE, Danae (Barry) Eitzmann of Seward, NE, Dr. Alicia Koopman-Schmidt and Scott Schmidt of Worthington, MN, Leah (Alex) Michel of Grand Island,NE, Cammie (Tyler) Benson of Hastings, NE, and Rachel (Nate) Stratton of Lincoln, NE; nine great grandchildren Matthew and Michaela Eden, Andrew Glatczak, Reagan, Kylie and Jax Meyers, and Amiyah and Jorda Eitzmann, and Miles Michel; nephews Gregg (Ann) Koopman of Battle Creek, and Todd (Ellen) Koopman of Kearney, NE; and one niece Gay Koopman of Fort Collins, CO. Leon was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane, his parents, brother Gene, sister-in-law Nyla Jane, son-in-law Kyle Swim and one brother in infancy.
