Palmquist officiating. Burial was at the Wayne Zion Cemetery with military honors. Leon Dirks, Anamosa, died Sept. 27 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Leon Earl Dirks was born April 27, 1948, in Monticello, the son of Earl and Marie Zimmerman Dirks. He received his education in the Anamosa schools, graduating in 1966and later attended Kirkwood Community College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was discharged at the rank of Specialist 4. He married Beth A. Henderson on Sept. 17, 1983, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Anamosa. At the time of his death he was a correctional officer at the Iowa State Men's Reformatory. Mr. Dirks was a member of the VFW and was the current commandeer. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sara, at home; two sons, Chanin Dirks and Jamey Dirks, both of Anamosa; two step-sons, Robin Pudil and Curt Pudil, both of Cedar Rapids; and his mother and step-father, Marie and Lyle Russell of Anamosa. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter in infancy. Casket bearers were Larry Huston, Don Mohr, Robert Brown, Rick June, Kenneth (Doug) Merrill and Delmar Thibedeau. Honorary bearers were Delbert Remington, David Kleis and Charles Byers.
