Leon was born December 10, 1921 near Dallas, South Dakota to Christian and Inga (Nore) Nelson. Leon moved with his family at age five to a farm northeast of Albion, NE. He attended (NE.) Nelson, of Albion, NE., passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion, NE. Leon was born December 10, 1921 near Dallas, South Dakota to Christian and Inga (Nore) Nelson. Leon moved with his family at age five to a farm northeast of Albion, NE. He attended (NE.) Albion High School where he played football and was a member of the National FFA Championship Livestock Judging Team. He was inducted into the Albion Athletic Hall of Fame. Leon enrolled in Colorado State University to study Pre-veterinary and play football. He left after one year and enlisted in the Army. He was a combat veteran who saw action in the European Theater of Operations. He reached the rank of Sergeant and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He was honorably discharged on February 2, 1946. Leon attended the Reisch School of Auctioneer in Indiana and spent the next 55 years selling sales with Dan Fuller, Ray Flanagan, Tom Johnson and Chris Nelsen. Leon also worked as a farmer, rancher and real estate broker. Leon was a member of Albion (NE.) VFW and Legion Post #162 and a past Commander of both. He founded the Legion Baseball Program and coached for many years winning four district titles. Until the last few years, on about any summer night you could find him at the sports complex checking out the local kids from T-Ball to the Legion Seniors. Leon was a charter member of the Nebraska Auctioneers Association and served on the Board of Directors for many years. He was President in 1976, Auctioneer of the Year in 1977 and was inducted into the Auctioneers Hall of Fame in 1998. Leon was a Charter Member of Nebraska Livestock Auction and served on the Board of Directors for many years. He was a Charter Member of the National Cattlemen's Association. Leon was a member of the Boone County Fair Board for 42 years. He and his partner Ray Flanagan started the 4-H Livestock Auction in 1954. He retired from the Fair Board in 1990 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994. Leon served many terms on the Albion City Council and was a founding member of the Albion Country Club. He was a member of Immanuel Zion Lutheran Church, South Branch and more recently Zion Lutheran Church. His favorite thing to do was keep up with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities. He also liked Nebraska and High School Athletics and had a lifelong love of animals, especially horses and dogs and watching cattle sales. Leon is survived by: wife of 66 years, Mary Nelson of Albion, NE.; daughter, Mary Lynne James and husband Dr. David James of Steamboat Springs, CO.; son, Chris Nelson of Albion, NE.; daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Nelson and husband Richard Yoder of Murray, NE.; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends. Leon was preceded in death by: parents, sister Margaret Lane, sister Doris and husband Duane Pont and brother-in-law Stewart Minnick. Interment was in The Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion, NE.
