He died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek. 1925-2018 Leon Theodore “Dutch” Rutjens was born April 2, 1925, to Leonard and Anna (Schinck) Rutjens, three and a half miles southwest of Tilden. He attended Bunker Hill School through the 10th grade and graduated from Tilden High School in 1941. Dutch had been a lifelong member of Mount Carmel Catholic Parish in Tilden. Dutch worked at Union Pacific Railroad and Swift Packing Plant in Omaha in 1942. He returned to Tilden to farm before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He served at Fort Lewis, Wash., and Mineral Wells, Texas. Dutch again returned to Tilden to farm in 1946. He obtained his pilot’s license in 1947. On Jan. 26, 1949, Dutch was united in marriage to Henrietta Becker at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. To this union, five children were born: Sharon, Donald, Thomas, Jerome and Steven. Continuing with farming until 1980, Dutch started to work for Moorman Manufacturing Co. in 1974, retiring in 1990 as a feed sales representative after 16 years. During this time, Dutch also helped Henrietta manage the Antelope Country Club in 1974 and 1975. He was also post commander of American Legion Post 170 in Tilden for seven years, first in 1958 and then from 1969 through 1974. Dutch was the Antelope County commander for two years from 1987 until 1988. Dutch is survived by his children, Sharon and Leroy Rahde of Norfolk, Don and Laura (Fox) Rutjens, Tom and Connie (Watson) Rutjens, Jerry Rutjens, and Steve and Maggie (Juleson) Rutjens, all of Tilden; 32 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one on the way; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Hodge; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dearly beloved spouse, Henrietta on Sept. 10, 2011; his parents, Leo and Anna; seven siblings; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Dutch was known for his wit and joking manner, and he loved to argue about any subject with anyone and everyone. He enjoyed golfing for many years and getting a card game going whenever he could.
