Mrs. Kavanaugh, the former Leona Berniece Zalazinski, was born March 28, 1916, in Chicago, to John and Pauline (Kulik) Zalazinski. Leona graduated from Holy Family Academy in Chicago in 1934. Following graduation, she was an operator for Bell Telephone Company in Chicago and was later a farm wife and homemaker. Read More	DEWITT, Iowa — Mrs. Leona B. (Johannsen) Kavanaugh, 99, of DeWitt, died Saturday afternoon May 2, 2015, at Westwing Place, DeWitt. Mrs. Kavanaugh, the former Leona Berniece Zalazinski, was born March 28, 1916, in Chicago, to John and Pauline (Kulik) Zalazinski. Leona graduated from Holy Family Academy in Chicago in 1934. Following graduation, she was an operator for Bell Telephone Company in Chicago and was later a farm wife and homemaker. Through mutual friends, Leona met and married Anton “Tony” Johannsen on Oct. 8, 1941. The couple farmed and raised their daughters at rural DeWitt. Tony preceded Leona in death on March 28, 1968. She later married John Kavanaugh on Oct. 24, 1970. They resided in DeWitt until his death on Nov. 3, 1994. Leona was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and the Altar and Rosary Society. Leona enjoyed playing Bingo, working puzzles and dancing. She will be remembered for her cooking and baking; especially her fried chicken and pies. Leona truly loved her whole family, especially the little ones. Her children are Barbara (Bill) Dies and Eleanor (Mike) Hinrichs of DeWitt. She has four grandchildren, Chris (Dawn) Hinrichs, Jay (Heidi) Dies, Jena (Nick) Byorum and Jared (Lea Ann) Dies; four great-grandsons, Hunter Gaskey, Henry Byorum, Dylan Dies and Brady Dies; a great-granddaughter, Brynlee Dies; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Tony, and husband, John, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Eugene, and two sisters, Irene and Elizabeth. The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 9-10:45 a.m. Thursday, May 7. A Service of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Fr. Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris and Dawn Hinrichs, Jay Dies, Jared Dies, and Jena and Nick Byorum. Honorary pallbearer will be Ronald Johannsen.
