Memorials may be designated to Lutheran Social Services, 1424 9th Ave. SE, Watertown, SD 57201 Leona Ida Baker, 93, formerly of Watertown, SD passed away January 16, 2013 in Alexandria, Virginia. Leona was born November 17, 1919 to Carl and Martha (Larson) Stormo on a farm near Troy, South Dakota. She was baptized January 1, 1920 and was confirmed July 2, 1933 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Troy. Leona graduated from Waverly High School in 1937. She attended Watertown Business College and then worked for Social Services in Hamlin and Codington counties from 1941 to 1946. On February 14, 1946 she married Dale Baker at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. After her marriage she lived in Estelline where they operated Baker's Bakery. Later they moved to Mobridge, South Dakota and then to Deadwood, South Dakota. After Dale's death in 1958 at Deadwood, she returned to Watertown and worked for Social Services in Watertown until her retirement in 1984. Leona was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church for most of her life and later Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. She was also an active member of Sons of Norway and participated in and volunteered for many other community organizations. Leona moved to Virginia in 2009 and shared many fond memories of her life in South Dakota with those she met. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend. She was forever thankful for those who helped her through life, working and raising a family on her own. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Baker; mother and father, Carl and Martha Stormo; brothers, Herbert, Maynard and Orvil Stormo; and daughter Susan Anderson. Survivors are a son, Cliff Baker of Ft. Collins, Colorado; a daughter, Ruth Gerloff of Alexandria VA; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
