Description	:	Eureka - Funeral service for Leona L. (Ottenbacher) Scheuffele, 82, of Eureka will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. The Rev. Dean Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Eureka. Schumacher, daughter of Jacob and Mathilda (Pfeifle) Schumacher was born Dec. 30, 1922, on the family homestead near Long Lake, S.D. She attended country school and helped on the family farm. She began a nursing career as a nurse's aide at the Eureka Community Hospital. She was united in marriage to Walter Ottenbacher in October of 1944 at Hoffnungstal Lutheran Church. They made their home in Campbell County on a family farm for 12 years. In 1958, they purchased a farm near Long Lake. In 1966, she started working at the Eureka Community Hospital as a surgical aide. They retired from farming in 1969 and moved to Eureka. Her husband died in March of 1982. She was then united in marriage to Fred Scheuffele in September of 1984 in Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. For many years, she cooked for numerous events in the Eureka area. She was well-known for her potato salad and was a communitywide volunteer. She had received numerous community volunteer awards. Her husband died in September of 2000 and she continued to make Eureka her home. Leona loved gardening, canning, knitting and quilting. Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were some of her most memorable and treasured times. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka and had been very active with WELCA. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a past member of Eureka Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include five sons, Larry (Pam) Ottenbacher, Wayne (Carol) Ottenbacher and Clyde (Bobbi) Ottenbacher, all of Eureka, Dennis (Marty) Ottenbacher of Pierre and Jeff (Lisa) Ottenbacher of Groton, Conn.; two daughters, Paulette (Max) Morse of Aberdeen and Nancy (Rick) Sonnenburg of Brookings; one son-in-law, Jerry Imberi of Eureka; four sisters, Adeline Binder of Leola, Evangeline Clark of Oregon, Eileen Gienger of Mobridge and Mildred (Jerald) Kluckman of Lusby, Md.; five brothers, Victor (LaVerna) Schumacher of Aberdeen, Paul (Doris) Schumacher of Seattle, Wash., Lawrence (Peggy) Schumacher of Ferndale, Wash., Robert (Iris) Schumacher of Tolstoy, S.D., and Ray Schumacher of Washington; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her parents, both husbands, one daughter, Sharleen Imberi, one sister, Gertrude Rueb, and one step-granddaughter, Tammy Jenner, preceded her in death. Honorary casketbearers will be Bobbie Battest, Jeanne Serr, Michelle Erdmann, Billie Johnson, Carla Zeeck, Julie Hill, Teri Ottenbacher, Amanda Imberi, Nichole Morse, Emily Morse, Heidi Sonnenburg and Abby Ottenbacher. Casketbearers will be Jerome Ottenbacher, Dale Ottenbacher, Tim Ottenbacher, Duane Ottenbacher, Dustin Ottenbacher, Drew Ottenbacher, Kyle Ottenbacher and Eric Ottenbacher. The organist will be Lana Hilgemann and there will be special music by Leona's grandchildren. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka have been entrusted with the arrangements.
