Read More	Billings Gazette, The (MT) — Wednesday, August 31, 2011: Leona Lucille Hiestand, 96 of Homer, Alaska HOMER, Alaska — Leona Lucille Hiestand passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at the Peninsula Hospital in Homer, Alaska, at the age of 96. Leona was born on July 6, 1915, in Billings, to Katherine Schmer Walker and Conrad Walker. In 1935, Leona married Lewis McBride. They had one child, Marilyn and later divorced. Leona married Leonard Hiestand on Sept. 3, 1948. Leona worked as a clerk at a drug store for many years and later at Hart-Albin, where she was a knitting instructor. Leona saw the positive in every situation and contributed to the world around her in many ways. She always said just what was on her mind but never complained whatever life sent her way. Leona dropped out of high school so she could work to pay for her younger sisters' education. Leona made a home wherever she lived, grew beautiful roses, and loved working with her hands. Her hobbies included knitting, needlepoint, embroidery, flower gardening, reading, and a little traveling with her husband, Leonard. Leona was devoted to her family and was very involved in several Masonic organizations, holding many offices, her favorite being chaplain. She lived in Billings almost her entire life and loved the city of Billings. She lived in Alaska the last 15 months and was cared for by her daughter, Marilyn Talkington. Leona said that Alaska was pretty but not home like Montana. Once while living there, she commented with curiosity and wonder on the funny-looking horses she saw outside her window; they were actually moose. Leona lived a long, remarkable life. She survived cancer in the 1960s. She was amazed that she saw the new millennium and said many times the past few years how surprised she was that she had lived so long. Leona's life was celebrated by her family and friends with memorable surprise parties on her 80th and 90th birthdays. She was always great fun to be around and leaves behind many happy memories. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Hiestand; her parents; stepson, Don Hiestand; stepdaughter, Darleen Hiestand Kudloff; son-in-law, Clive Talkington; sisters, Helen Brown and Erna Auker; and brothers, Rinehart Walker and Eugene Walker. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Talkington; grandchildren, Terry (Michelle) Talkington, Todd (Marni) Talkington, Gail (Gary) Burmeister, Leigh Ann Kudloff, Brenda Kudloff, Jim Kudloff and Kathy (Raymond) Schanno; 11 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, as well as her nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Cremation and Funeral Gallery. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
