Description	:	Leona Knudson and her husband Loyd, longtime McLaughlin residents, had spent their honeymoon in Gettysburg. After years of farming near McLaughlin, Leona broke her hip in the 1990s and, after talks with the family, she and Loyd decided Gettysburg was the place to spend their golden years. After years of farming near McLaughlin, Leona broke her hip in the 1990s and, after talks with the family, she and Loyd decided Gettysburg was the place to spend their golden years. They made their home in the assisted living housing, filling their final years with friendships they made, among them with Samantha Shaw, Erin Hagney and Alfred Nagel. It was as though their life had come full circle. Gettysburg held a special place in her heart. Loyd died in November of 1999. Leona stayed on in Gettysburg, doing scrap booking, playing bridge, playing the piano and Vespers as well as seeing her family continue to grow. Leona died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at Gettysburg Medical Center at the age of 93. She was a city born girl, born July 8, 1913, to Carl and Hulda (Anderson) Falde at home on Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, Minn. As the first born of the Faldes' four children, she grew up helping take care of her brother and sisters. Those years were spent in many places, from Minneapolis to Mitchell, to Mound City and other places in-between. Money was tight, but Leona was able to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls. To help pay the tuition, she sold subscriptions to the "Mound City Monitor," the paper her father printed. While in college, she lived in homes of families who needed someone to help care for their children, working before and after she had classes to attend. She had met Hazel Knudson during grade school and had been invited out to her farm a number of times. At a school picnic when she was in high school, she made quite an impression on Hazel's brother Loyd. After the courtship, Leona and Loyd were married in her parents' home in Mound City on July 24, 1936, at 8:30 p.m. and took off for Gettysburg. After their marriage, and honeymoon, they lived with his parents on their farm until school began and both Leona and Loyd taught school in LaPlant. Soon they became parents, first with Robert Warren on April 25, 1937, then Gary David on Dec. 29, 1940, Thomas Carl on Oct. 19, 1942, and Joy Ann Hulda on July 15, 1948. In the fall of 1946, Loyd purchased a farm southwest of McLaughlin. Here they raised Hereford cattle, pigs, chickens and farmed. They built a new home in 1958-1959. They moved into McLaughlin in 1973. After they moved to McLaughlin, their children were married and soon there were grandchildren. Leona often said, "There were many good times spent in McLaughlin!" Through the years they traveled to Bell conventions, cousin's reunions and various sporting events. Together, they collected antiques, coins, stamps, bells and elephants figures. Leona was so grateful that her family and friends from Mound City area and Norway Lutheran Church never forgot her on special occasions and always made special efforts to keep her informed of what was going on "back home." Survivors include her three sons, Bob (Kathy) Knudson of Glenham, Gary (Karen) Knudson of Rhinelander, Wis., and Tom (Mary Ann) Knudson of Mobridge; one daughter, Joy Wittler of Agar; one sister-in-law, Helen Falde of Stillwater, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Her husband Loyd, two sisters and one brother preceded Leona in death. Funeral services for Leona were Friday, Jan. 5, at Norway Lutheran Church in rural Glenham. The Rev. Dennis Fonkert officiated. Casketbearers were Boyd, Mark, Eric and T.J. Knudson and Matt and Jesse Wittler. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.
