Visitation begins at the Church 5:00 PM Thursday with a 7:00 PM Wake Service. Leona Mary Grismer, daughter of Magdalena (Fix) and Frank Grismer, was born near Hosmer, SD on August 29, 1933. She was brought up on her parents’ farm SW of Hosmer and attended rural school. Following her schooling, she waitressed at the Sale Barn Café in Mobridge, SD. Leona married Donald Schmidt at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Bowdle on June 18, 1957. They leased and then purchased Don’s dad’s farm NW of Tolstoy. In addition to keeping busy with farm work and child rearing, Leona also worked as a nurse’s aide at the Oahe Manor. She retired from the Manor in 1998 after 25 years of service. Donald died June 2, 2003. Leona remained on the farm until November 2005, when she relocated to the Oahe Manor where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Hoven. Her passions in life were the huge garden that she tended, baking, and cooking. She also loved crocheting and made many blankets over the years. Leona will be remembered as a devoted caretaker to the Manor residents as they were like a second family to her. She was preceded in death by her father on July 11, 1975, her mother on May 17, 1979, three brothers (Frankie, Andrew, and Adam) and one sister (Melvina Lesmeister). Honorary bearers will be Leona’s co-workers at the Oahe Manor. Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
