She had been a Helena resident for 40 years. Leona was very proud of her Belgian heritage. She was the daughter of Belgian immigrants Richard and Mary Louise DeCock, who farmed in the Yellowstone River Valley for many years. She was the only one of their four children — who included Leona's sister, Clarice Van Hemelryck, and brothers, Oscar and Leo DeCock — to be born in the United States. Leona often fondly recalled a trip she took to Belgium with her father when she was 15, an adventure that included crossing the Atlantic on the RMS Queen Mary. Raised a farm girl, Leona can be seen in old family photographs astride horses or her father's prize Hereford bull. However, the reality of everyday chores, the least favorite of which, she once said, was chasing pigs from the garden, made her realize that farming was not the life for her. In Hysham, Leona enjoyed hanging out at the soda fountain at Queenie's drug store and going to movies at the Yucca Theater. In 1939 she graduated from Hysham High School as class valedictorian. She attended what was then Montana State University at Missoula, obtaining a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition in 1943. Among her fondest memories of college life was her affiliation with Alpha Phi Sorority. She worked as a dietitian in hospitals in Boston and Portland, Ore., before enlisting in the Army Medical Corps in July 1945. She was assigned to army hospitals in California, Indiana, West Virginia and Florida. In 1947 she was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. Leona returned to Montana to work as a dietitian in the new Veterans Administration hospital in Miles City, where she met George Fenner. They were married in December 1954. When the V.A. asked George to transfer to South Dakota, the couple opted to remain in Montana. They farmed for a time in Hysham before moving the family to Missoula, where they opened a sporting goods store, All American Sports. In 1969 the family moved to Helena, where Leona lived for the rest of her life. George passed away in 1997. Leona continued her career as a dietitian at St. John's Hospital in Helena. After it closed, she worked as an administrative aide at Carroll College, several state agencies, and Montana Magazine. She regularly volunteered as an Election Day poll-worker and was active in St. Mary Catholic Community. Her favorite activities were gardening, cooking, reading (especially the Independent Record word for word), traveling, camping, and visiting with family and friends. At 5 feet 2 inches, Leona was small in stature but big in heart. She had a wonderful smile, a great sense of humor and a contagious laugh. She never said an unkind word about anyone and was loved by everyone who knew her. Memorials are suggested in Leona's name to the Cancer Treatment Center at St. Peter's Hospital or Hospice of St. Peter's, 2475 Broadway, Helena, Mt 59601. .
