Description	:	Leonard Mattke Leonard Mattke, age 82, died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at home in Valley Springs, SD. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday at First Lutheran Church in Valley Springs. Visitation will begin at 3:00pm on Thursday with the family present from 5-7 pm with a Masonic Service at 7:00pm all at Miller Funeral Home (507 S. Main). His funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday at First Lutheran Church in Valley Springs. Visitation will begin at 3:00pm on Thursday with the family present from 5-7 pm with a Masonic Service at 7:00pm all at Miller Funeral Home (507 S. Main). He always said he was "from the old country," but Leonard A. Mattke was born September 25, 1928, in Huron, SD, to Arthur and Elsie Mattke. He was baptized and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church. Leonard attended a one-room schoolhouse for eight years and graduated from Huron High School in 1946. He was active in 4-H, and received numerous state and national awards. After high school, he worked for Standard Oil Company for over 20 years. Leonard was united in marriage to Betty J. Polly in Huron on October 20, 1950. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of sergeant-major. Leonard and Betty moved to Valley Springs, SD, in 1958, where he also worked part-time as the city finance officer. From 1967 to until his retirement in 1984, he worked as the credit manager for J.I. Case. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Valley Springs. He was a life member of the Elks, life member of the American Legion, and life member of the El Riad Shrine. He was past commander of the Valley Springs American Legion, past commander of the Minnehaha County American Legion and the past commander of the El Riad Shrine Legion of Honor. He was on the Valley Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the Valley Springs Development Corporation. Leonard was proud of the years he spent as the coordinator of the Valley Springs GOLD program, a development program through the Governor's Office of Economic Development from 1991 until the program ended in 2002. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing, and was devoted to gardening and sharing the produce with family, friends, and neighbors. He was a serious card player, especially a good game of Pitch, and insisted on everyone following Hoyle rules. Grateful for having shared his life are: daughter Deb and her husband, Steve Wise; daughter Barb and her husband, Tim Koehn; son Mark and his wife, Peggy; grandchildren-Matt Norberg, Michelle Fox, Laurie Gilman, Kelsey Collier-Wise, Taylor Mattke, and Sara Wise; great-grandkids—Hayden, Carter, Griffin, Grant, Aurora, and baby Norberg; sister Phyllis Modine; brother Larry Mattke, brother Jim Mattke; along with a dozens of in-laws, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
