This was indeed a case where the tender and sympathetic emotions of the entire neighborhood were touched as evidenced by the large and sympathetic audience that was present during the last obsequies. Leonard was indeed a sweet and lovely child, the idol of his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Porter, and his little foster sisters whose hearts were torn asunder by his untimely death. At the death of Leonard's mother at the age of one week, he was taken by Mrs. Porter at the request of his dying mother and cared for by Mrs. Porter as if he had been her own son. Week by week this sweet little babe entwined itself in the hearts and lives of this entire family to such an extent that when the cruel monster, death, claimed the darling child their hearts were broken and they like "Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted." "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them (not) for of such is the kingdom of Heaven." The funeral was held at his foster parents' home on October 30th, conducted by Geo. W. Brown, together with a very large concourse of sympathetic friends and neighbors who mingled freely their tears of sympathy with the grief stricken ones. His little body was borne to the Cherokee cemetery by a funeral cortege over one half mile in length and was gently, quietly and peacefully laid to rest in the "Silent City."
