Read More	ROUTE 56 BRIDGE TO BE NAMED FOR LOCAL CITIZEN Nelson County Board memorializes Leonard Alexander Snead A bridge on Route 56 over Tye River will be named in memory of local resident Leonard Alexander Snead during a ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 22. Snead, known to most as "Pop" or "Uncle LA", was born in Nelson County in 1886. He taught school briefly in the county before beginning a career that included interaction with many of the most influential political figures of his day. During World War I, Snead devised an emergency relief efforts plan called the "Federal Emergency Relief Fuel Program" that was adopted by President Woodrow Wilson. As a result, Wilson appointed Snead the United States Assistant Fuel Administrator. This working relationship also afforded Snead membership on the Railroad War Board, the War Industries, the Department of Interior and the Council of National Defense. In addition, Snead served as President of the Boy Scouts of America – DC Council. From his county home, GooseHeaven on Campbell's Mountain and the historic home he purchased, Winton, former home of Patrick Henry's mother, he continued his preservation efforts in Nelson County along with Captain "Billy" Massie with the highlight of their work being the acquisition of lands to establish Crabtree Falls. Using his political ties and influence, Snead was able to secure Congressional funds which, combined with his own contributions, were used to purchase the lands surrounding Crabtree Falls and to preserve it under the National Forest Service domain. Until his death in 1975, Snead continued to support the preservation of land in his beloved Nelson County. The Nelson County Board of Supervisors requested the naming by resolution to the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). The CTB unanimously passed the motion on the resolution in July 2011.
