Description	:	Leonard Malena, 92 of Columbus, Nebraska, (formerly of Creston, Nebraska) died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at the Columbus Community Hospital. The funeral service will be Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 1:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev.'s Doug Zurek and Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Creston at 4:00 PM on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Saturday from 12:30 PM until service time at the church. Leonard Charles Malena was born July 12, 1918, in Atkinson, Nebraska, to Charles and Alice (Severa) Malena. At the age of six months, his family moved to Leigh, Nebraska where they resided on a farm and where Leonard attended country school and helped on the farm. As a result of the depression, at the age of fifteen, he followed the harvest in Minnesota, and in 1936 began working for Spanhake Oil Company in Leigh. Leonard married Joyce Loseke of Creston on February 17, 1941, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Creston and they farmed southwest of Leigh. In February of 1943, Leonard and Joyce moved to a farm one-half mile east and one-half mile north of Creston, where they lived for fifteen years, before moving to a farm at Hooper, Nebraska. In 1959, they moved back to Creston, where Leonard both farmed and worked for Loseke Implement Company. In 1961, Leonard began working for Great Western Livestock Commission Company in Omaha, where he was a cattle salesman for twenty-four and one-half years until his retirement in July of 1984. Leonard was a former member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Creston and is currently a registered member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. Leonard served on the Creston town board, was mayor of Creston, served as a caretaker at the park and the Creston cemetery.
