Funeral services for Leonard Van Hamme were held at 11 AM, Thursday, April 8, 1999, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. Rev. Richard Okumu officiated and the organist was Marilyn Kriegel. Recordings were by Donna Vercande and Dennis Van Hamme and the selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Here I am, Lord." Casket-Bearers were Richard Blomme, Vernon Blomme, Duane Blomme, Roger Campbell, Richard Cole, and Jeff Gryp. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. A Rosary service was held at 7:30 PM, Wednesday at the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established. The son of Victor and Mary Blomme Van Hamme, Leonard was born Sept. 16, 1926, near Victor, Iowa. He was raised in the Victor area and attended rural schools. He was married to Marjorie Mary La Kose on Sept. 17, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. The couple farmed southwest of Victor from 1949 until Sept. of 1978 when they moved to Brooklyn. He was employed at various jobs through the years: Yeisley Elevator, Fontinel Produce, M & N Grain, all of Victor, The Coastal Mart, Hwy. 21, and recently at the Fuel Mart, Malcom. He also owned a corn sheller and trucking business for a few years. He played his button accordion for many functions and later was joined by his daughter, Donna, who plays a piano accordion. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a daughter Donna Kay Vercande and her husband, Dennis, of Brooklyn; a son Dennis and his wife, Gaye, of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Diana Kay and Dustin Patrick Vercande of Brooklyn and Tammie Van Hamme of Grinnell; one sister, Suzanne Block of Hartwick and her family. He was preceded by his parents.
