Description	:	(veteran) Leonard E. Hammang, 90, of Fremont died November 14, 1987, at the Skilled Care Center of Memorial Hospital of Dodge County. He was born in Clarks and his family moved to Arlington when he was two weeks old. Hammang was a veteran of World War I, and served with the US Army in the Philippine Islands. Hammang, 90, of Fremont died November 14, 1987, at the Skilled Care Center of Memorial Hospital of Dodge County. He was born in Clarks and his family moved to Arlington when he was two weeks old. Hammang was a veteran of World War I, and served with the US Army in the Philippine Islands. He spent one year at West Point Military Academy before his discharge. Those discharge papers were signed by then Brigadier General Douglas McArthur. Hammang then graduated from the College of Agriculture, University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1923, where he was affiliated with Alpha Theta Chi chapter of Chi Phi fraternity. On October 30, 1923, he married Bessie “Betty” Yantz of Daykin. While working for Roberts Dairy Co., he lived in Omaha from 1926-33; in Sioux City, Iowa, from 1933-39, and Lincoln from 1939-40. In 1940, he moved to Fremont and built the Hammang Locker Plant, which he operated until retiring in 1966. He also operated a locker plant in Cedar Bluffs from 1947-64. Hammang was a member of Rotary International in Sioux City from 1934-39, the Lincoln Rotary Club in 1939, and has been a member of the Fremont Rotary Club since 1940. He was a member of the Fremont Masonic Lodge 15, AF & AM, the Fremont Shrine Club, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City and the Scottish Rite at Omaha. He was also a member of Fremont American Legion Post 20. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 18, 1987, at Moser Memorial Chapel with Rev. Mrs. Ella Powell officiating. Fremont Masonic Lodge 15, AF & AM conducted Masonic Graveside Services. Military graveside services were conducted by Fremont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and Fremont American Legion Post 20. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont. Pallbearers were Warren Hammang, Dr. Jack Cady, Francis Tank, Rudy Oeltjen, F. C. “Bill” McGrew and Jerry Sokolovsky. He is survived by wife Betty of Fremont; two sons, Jerome Hammang of Hyde Park, Vermont, and Gerald Hammang of Fremont, five granddaughters and three grandsons, one sister, Mrs. Eloise Kruse of Fremont.
